FAQ's

Laser hair removal can feel like a big step, so I’ve put together clear, honest answers to the questions I am asked most often in clinic. My goal is to help you feel informed, confident, and completely at ease.

  1. The laser targets the pigment in the hair – The laser emits a specific wavelength of light that is attracted to melanin (the pigment that gives hair its colour).  When the light hits the follicle, it’s absorbed.

  2. Light converts to heat – This absorbed light turns into heat, which damages the follicle.  The goal isn’t to heat the skin, it is to heat the follicle just enough to disrupt its ability to regrow hair.

  3. Only hairs in the active growth phase can be treated – Hair grows in cycles, and the laser can only treat follicles when the hair is actively growing (the anagen phase). Only 20% of the hair is in the growth phase at any one time, this is why clients need a course of sessions spaced several weeks apart.

  4. Modern lasers protect the skin – Medical‑grade systems like the DEKA Motus AY use advanced cooling and stable energy delivery to keep the skin safe and comfortable throughout treatment.

I use the DEKA Motus AY, a medical‑grade 4 Alexandrite & Nd:YAG laser. It’s one of the most advanced systems available and is FDA‑cleared for safe, effective treatment on all skin types, including darker and tanned skin. Its Moveo technology also makes treatments significantly more comfortable than traditional lasers.  See more about this amazing machine on ‘Technology’ page.

Short answer: Yes — because the machine determines your results.

Not all lasers are created equal. A high‑quality, medical‑grade 4 system like the DEKA Motus AY delivers faster, safer, more comfortable, and more permanent results than cheaper IPL or older diode laser devices. In the long run, clients often save money because they need fewer sessions and achieve better outcomes.

Yes. When performed with a medical‑grade device by a trained practitioner, laser hair removal is extremely safe. I carry advanced laser qualifications and follow strict protocols to ensure your skin is protected at every stage.

Most clients describe the Motus AY as virtually pain‑free. You will feel warmth and a gentle sensation on the skin, but nothing sharp or uncomfortable. Many clients are surprised by how easy the treatment feels.

Our pain-free Moveo handpiece moves quickly and efficiently across the surface of the skin with the sapphire cooling tip being in constant contact, cooling the area during the treatment. It can cause a mild tingling sensation, and the treatment area may feel a little warm afterwards, but no discomfort should be felt.

Our standard handpiece feels more like a traditional laser and can be described as feeling like an elastic band snapping on the skin. Whilst that may feel a little uncomfortable, we can use cool packs to help, if needed.

Almost any area on the body with unwanted hair can be treated. If you are unsure, just ask, I will guide you.

Whatever area you are having treated, my aim is to make you feel relaxed and comfortable.  Basically, if you are happy, I am happy.  No need to be embarrassed, I have been through it myself!

Yes. The Motus AY is suitable for all Fitzpatrick skin types (I–VI). Its Moveo technology allows safe, effective treatment even on darker skin tones, which older Alexandrite lasers could not treat.

Absolutely, you can shave as much as you like while having laser treatment.

If you are having laser hair removal treatment in the same area where botox and filler has been administered, you will need to leave a two-week gap (either side).

Facial hair usually between 8 – 12 treatments.

Body hair usually between 6 – 10 treatments.

This is because the laser can only treat hairs in their active growth phase (Anagen). Hormones, hair density, and the area being treated can all influence the number of sessions needed. Further treatments may be required for some people for optimum results.

For facial hair we leave 4 – 6 weeks between treatments

For body hair we leave 6 – 8 weeks between treatments

Because each individual laser hair removal journey is different, your treatment area will be continually assessed throughout your course of treatment and I will recommend when you should return for your next session.

Laser hair removal offers long term, stable reduction. Most clients enjoy a dramatic and lasting reduction in hair growth. Hormones, genetics, and certain medications can influence regrowth, so occasional maintenance sessions may be recommended.

Top up laser hair removal treatments are recommended to keep these finer hairs away and are typically needed once or twice a year.

Yes. Many clients with PCOS choose laser because it offers far better results than shaving or waxing. You may need additional sessions or maintenance, but the improvement is often life‑changing.

Stop waxing/epilating/plucking 4-6 weeks before your first laser hair removal session to ensure your follicles are full and you have enough hair to treat.

Do not apply any moisturiser, cream, oil or lotion to the treatment area 24 hours prior, Aloe Vera is recommended if skin is irritated from shaving.

Close shave the area the night before and not the day of treatment, because when you shave you slightly exfoliate and irritate the area so allow the extra time overnight for the skin to regenerate and make the treatment more comfortable. Shaving the day of your treatment will cause your skin to feel more sensitive throughout the treatment and may limit the amount of energy we can use due to skin sensitivity.

Avoid sunbeds, strong UV exposure and fake tan for minimum 2 weeks (both side of treatment).

You will receive full pre treatment guidance during your consultation.

Keep the area cool by applying thermal water spray and aloe vera gel for 48 hours following treatment.

Avoid strenuous exercise, tight clothing, swimming, saunas, steam rooms, hot baths/showers, fragranced lotions and creams.

Avoid products containing Vitamin A or Acids (glycolic, AHA’s, BHA’s, Lactic), Vitamin C, exfoliants, peels etc. for 7 days following treatment.

Avoid make-up (unless it is mineral make-up) for 24 hours following treatment.

Immediately after treatment it is completely normal to experience:

  • Redness (erythema) — often looks like mild sunburn
  • Perifollicular oedema — tiny goosebump like swelling around each follicle
  • Warmth or heat in the skin — usually settles within a few hours
  • Mild tenderness — especially in sensitive areas

These reactions are actually indications the laser has targeted the follicles effectively.

Over the next 24–48 hours you may notice:

  • Skin feeling slightly tight, dry, or sensitive
  • A faint “sunburn” sensation
  • Occasional itching as the skin calms

Cool packs, aloe vera gel, and avoiding heat help a lot here.

Over the next 1–2 weeks (this is when the magic happens):

  • Shedding – treated hairs begin to fall out or “push through”
  • Patchiness – some areas look smoother sooner than others
  • The illusion of regrowth – hairs emerging are usually dead hairs being expelled, not new growth

Clients often think the treatment “didn’t work” at this stage, but this is exactly what should happen.

Prices vary depending on the area being treated. I offer single sessions and discounted courses for the best value. You’ll receive a personalised treatment plan and pricing during your consultation.  See pricing page for more information.

Your Laser Hair Removal Consultation

Every journey at Laser + Light Skin Clinic begins with a thorough consultation and patch test. This allows me to assess your skin, check for any sensitivities, and ensure the treatment is completely safe for you.

During your consultation, I will explain how the treatment works, what results to expect, and how to prepare for the best outcome. It is also a great opportunity for you to get to know me and feel confident in the process.

Once your patch test is complete, I will create a personalised treatment plan tailored to your skin type, hair type, and goals. You will have plenty of time to ask questions and discuss anything you’d like to know before starting your course.
